Escape has come at a high cost, and though Vynasha freed the imprisoned beasts, she has awakened an ancient evil that now stalks her. For the curse is unfinished with the one the prophecy spoke of, and Grendel continues to haunt her dreams.

This time she won’t fight the oncoming darkness alone.

Ceddrych may not be her brother by blood, but their bond has only grown stronger. When the wolves they’ve found refuge with threaten them, Ceddrych and Vynasha must fight together to overcome enemies around them. Danger lurks at every corner, and only by playing the pack alpha’s games can they survive the winter.

One thing rings true in the waking world and her dreams: Grendel won’t sleep forever.

Only by claiming her powers can Vynasha protect her newfound family and prevent the ruination of Wylderland. A dark tale of enchantment and woe, perfect for fans of Margaret Rogerson and Holly Black, Scarred Beauty is the second installment of the epic Wylder Tales Series!

Guest post:

Prompt: 23 July: “Which chapter did you enjoy writing the most and why?”

I’ve always been a fan of the “slow burn.” When reading fantasy, I’m accustomed to the often slow build to big action sequences. In fantasy romance, the best stories are when characters at odds eventually give in to all that romantic tension. I bring this same love to most of my stories, and when writing Craving Beauty, this is most evident when Vynasha finally meets her “Beast.”
After days of traveling through the mountains in winter, Vynasha reaches the castle. She has sacrificed everything to reach this place, all hoping to find her missing father and brother. Vynasha isn’t the strongest of characters. She’s not a fighter, and not as well read as her brother. But her will is stronger, and it all the moments leading to this point have been preparing and leading her here.
Of course, she doesn’t expect her host to be a talking beast who calls himself Ferox…

Vynasha turned toward the hearth to greet a tall figure garbed in an indigo robe as it emerged from the shadows. The darkness he drew from clung to him still, masking his features as he greeted in a rumbling voice, “Enjoying your dinner, my lady?”
It was the beast from her dream.
The voice in the wind.
“It’s you,” Vynasha breathed, her grip painfully tight on the arms of her chair.
The beast shifted, a subtle tilt of a shadowed paw as he approached two chairs set before the great hearth. “Apologies for the meager fare, but we cannot afford better with the wolves attacking our borders constantly.”
“Why are you not joining me?” Her voice creaked as she took in the shift of a tail beneath his sapphire cloak, the twitch of pointed, furred ears, the glint of horns.
His massive head shifted, revealing a sleek, black-nosed snout, casting his silvery fur with golden firelight. “As you might have guessed, it is not a simple matter for me to eat as you do. I would not wish to ruin your appetite.”
Her meal forgotten, Vynasha gathered her skirts and crossed the hall to meet him. A wiser person would have stayed put. But the beast had not harmed her… yet. And Vynasha needed answers. The swish of her skirts met the beast’s ears and his silver fur bristled in the firelight.
“Are you so certain you wish to greet a monster, Beauty?” He sank against the wings of a high-backed chair.
Vynasha’s fists clenched her skirts as she slowed her steps. “You don’t seem like a monster to me,” she whispered as she caught the jewel glimmer of his green eyes.
“You may feel differently one day,” he replied, hand stretching out, black claws clicking together. “But if you insist, please. Have a seat, my lady.”

As you can see, I’m not just a fan of slow burn, but of monsters and misfits as well. The beast, Ferox, isn’t what Vynasha expects. And she isn’t a conventional beauty, but a scarred witch. We might expect them to be enemies, and I could have written them this way. But isn’t it more fun to make them something like friends instead? At least in the beginning…

“I am sorry I do not have the answers you seek. What I can offer you, however, is the chance to rest and recover from your journey.” His green eyes glowed with compassion and an unspoken plea.
She clenched the fabric of her skirts even tighter. “What do you propose?”
“Remain here in this castle as my guest willingly, and I will see to your every need,” he began.
“My horse, Dragos?” she interrupted. “I won’t leave him in the cold so close to whatever haunts your lands.”
Ferox inclined his head. “Your friend is already a guest in our stables and quite content, as my servants last reported.”
“What else?” she asked, with a strength she didn’t feel. “What’s in it for you?”
“Besides the pleasure of your company? You shall dine with me here each night, but I must request, for your safety, that unless you have an escort, you remain locked in your room.”
Vynasha’s muscles ached with fresh tension and the crackle of magick beneath her skin. “What if I refuse? What if I take my horse and leave tonight?” Not that her body was fit to carry her anywhere without provisions. All humor and kindness fled Ferox’s beastly visage. “Then you will indeed find yourself locked inside a prison of your own making, Beauty.”

Shadows of Nightshade (The Garden of Eternal Flowers #1)

By Lyla Oweds

Genre: Paranormal Romance/ Paranormal Horror

Age category: Young Adult/ New Adult

Release Date: 8 March 2023

Blurb:

I dream of a time where I was warm, safe, and loved.

But my waking reality is starkly different.

Anxiety plagues me and spirits haunt the shadows. No matter how fast I run, I can’t seem to escape my past.

The only solace and steady force in my life is my best friend, Finn.

And now… there’s a ghost haunting me. And I’m not certain if it wants help or if it wants to kill me. There’s only one person who can understand: Finn’s brother, Damen.

However, in reaching out, I’m betraying Finn and setting things into motion that cannot be undone.

But nobody ever said that doing the right thing was easy.

The Garden of Eternal Flowers is a re-envisioning of my Grimm Cases series. Eternal Flowers has taken my original vision of Bianca’s story and transformed it into something new and beautiful. Some chapters are similar, and some dialogue is the same, as The Grimm Cases, Origins, but overall, about 75% of the book has been entirely revisioned with new plot points, mystery, and interpersonal relationships. Also, unlike Origins (originally a Wattpad release), there is now a clear beginning, climax, and conclusion in each individual novel, which allows them to be read alone or as part of the ongoing series.

I hope that you will enjoy Shadows of Nightshade as much as I enjoyed writing it. Truly, it is an honor to write about Bianca and her boys, and all of these characters are near and dear to my heart.

Trigger Warning: This series deals with the aftermath of severe childhood trauma.

Excerpt:

I wasn’t sure why he thought he deserved any special rights to my time, but it was obvious that he believed he could do whatever he wanted. How did he become so arrogant?
I opened my mouth to respond—which would probably have ended with me embarrassing myself—but nothing escaped. I stared at him, my heart racing, as I stood speechless. Then laughter—close enough for me to pick up—drifted over from the next row.
The sound shattered the enchantment cast over me—how could I have forgotten our position—and my face burst with heat. How would this scene appear to anyone passing by?
Damen’s eyes glinted mischievously. He must have had the same realization.
“Let me go,” I hissed. But my whispered venom only encouraged him, and he smiled. My traitorous heart began to beat faster. “Someone might see us!”
“Really?” His grin grew wider. This was the expression he’d had when we first met. “Then it’s fine if we don’t get caught? Consider it noted.”
“No!” I was internally screaming, even though my words were a weak protest. “You can’t play around with students anyway.” Not that it mattered there’d be no games between us—ever. “You’re basically a professor.”
“Ah.” He ran his finger down my cheek and I shivered. “But you’re not my student. I can’t help it.” His lips dipped slightly, and he tilted his head as his gaze continued to hold mine. “You’ve taken root in my mind.”
How idiotic. I would bet my shoes that he said that to everyone.
“Why are you so annoying?” I gritted out. Plus, what even was that line? It sounded like something from a cheesy romance novel. I’d be shocked if that ever worked for him in the past.
Finn’s stupid, horny brother. He could go flirt with someone else. I didn’t even remember why I wanted his help anymore, because no matter how much I wanted to lean into his touch or melt under his scorching gaze, I wanted to poke him in the eyes that much more.
What a quandary.
